A “Paris Moment” for Biodiversity? Biodiversity and Climate Action After the Montreal Agreement

In December 2022, governments from around the world met in Montreal to flesh out the details of a global biodiversity framework that would govern efforts to reign in biodiversity loss so steep that some have referred to it as “biological annihilation.”

This meeting – the fifteenth Conference of the Parties under the Convention on Biological Diversity – produced the Montreal-Kunming Global Biodiversity Framework, which observers have likened to biodiversity’s “Paris” moment.

What does the Montreal-Kunming Framework establish? What does it mean for the rights agenda? And how can litigators and practitioners ensure that this Framework has a real shot at success?

To explore these questions and others, Professor César Rodríguez-Garavito interviews David R. Boyd, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights and the environment, who has been at the forefront of efforts to address the rights implications of the biodiversity emergency.
