The Rise of Climate Litigation: A Conversation with UN Special Rapporteur Ian Fry

Increasing awareness of climate change’s impact on human rights has led to the appointment of Dr. Ian Fry as the first U.N. Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of climate change. As Special Rapporteur, Ian Fry has issued reports on the rights of persons displaced by climate change and the human rights implications of failing to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. On October 19th 2023, he presented his latest report to the U.N. General Assembly on climate litigation, climate legislation, and intergenerational justice.

The Special Rapporteur sat down with CLX Director César Rodríguez-Garavito to discuss his latest report. They spoke about trends and developments in climate litigation, as well as the role this litigation is playing in the global climate regime.
